Champions of the Nation: Rotary Club of Chennai Capital Honored Icons Who Elevated India Globally

In a grand tribute to the extraordinary minds who have elevated the country’s stature on the world stage, the Rotary Club of Chennai Capital (Rotary District 3233) hosted its landmark Vocational Awards 2026. The celebration of patriotism and triumph took place at Greams Hall, Radisson Blu.

This year’s roll of honor stood as a heartfelt thank you from a grateful community to four legendary pioneers who have elevated India. The evening paid tribute to Padma Shri Dr. S. Thanikachalam, a medical titan and former Vice-Chancellor of Sri Ramachandra University whose lifelong dedication to cardiology has protected the nation’s health and saved countless lives. Joining him was Dr. S. Pandian, an eminent aerospace scientist and former Director of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (ISRO), whose brilliant mind guided the design and launch of India’s landmark space rockets.

The celebration of national pride continued with Dr. Sudhanshu Mani, revered nationwide as the “Father of Train 18,” the engineering trailblazer who led the team that designed and delivered the iconic Vande Bharat Express. Rounding out this extraordinary group was Mr. Nimal Raghavan, celebrated as the “Water Warrior of India,” a tireless environmental crusader who left a corporate career to revive dead water bodies and bring hope back to rural farming communities.

Gracing this monumental occasion as the Chief Guest was Thiru. V. K. Ramkumar, Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Anna Nagar Constituency. Joining him as Guests of Honor were prominent Rotary leaders, including Rtn. Devendran D. (Governor, RI District 3233, 25-26) and Rtn. Shriram Duvvuri (Governor, RI District 3233, 26-27).

The evening was guided by an inspiring theme: “Sovereign Stature, Homegrown Genius: Celebrating the Hands That Shape India’s Glory.” This theme beautifully reflected what we stand for as Rotarians, showing that our professional skills are the most powerful tools we have to serve humanity and create lasting change.

The organization of this national tribute was led by the dedicated team of the club, ensuring that purposeful service remains the true heartbeat of their outreach. Rtn. Apoorva Modi, President of the Rotary Club of Chennai Capital, led the chapter for this milestone event. He actively guided the club’s growth and humanitarian outreach, ensuring that professional excellence drives community progress.

Steering the project alongside him was Rtn. Vinay Grandhi, Project Chair – Vocational Service, who meticulously anchored the awards to ensure the landmark event was a resounding success. This massive endeavor was further made possible by the dedicated support and presence of key club pillars, including Rtn. Satya Rao, Rtn. Varindar Singh Bobby, Rtn. Aloke Mimani, Rtn. Veer Shivaji, Rtn Rishi Wadhwa, Rtn. Rajkumar Narang (Secretary), and Ann Roshni Modi.

“Our theme is a testament to the fact that India’s greatest wealth lies in the genius of her people,” said President Apoorva Modi. “By honoring these four incredible icons who have made India proud on land, in our waters, and across the stars, we wanted to remind our club members of the incredible heights that vocational service can reach. We hope their stories recharge our fellowship and inspire every Rotarian to find new, impactful ways to utilize our own professional avenues for the greater good.”
